Thickening Agents

These types of additives contain polymers, which thicken the oil. Because the oil is now thicker, it will accumulate where a 'tired' piston ring stops tightness.

Therefore, oil pressure rises, indicating a slow-down of circulation through the lubrication circuit &, consequently, considerably reducing the lubrication efficacy & a reduction in thermal evacuation.

Cold starts are not aided, because it takes longer to establish the necessary viscosity of the lubricant.

As 70% of engine wear occurs during cold starts, the wear factor increases with the use of such additives, because these slow down the oil circulation in the lubrication channels.
